Finca los Halcones Bobal Crianza, Spain (bottle price £16)
Although it’s the second most planted grape in Spain, Bobal is not exactly a household name even in its home country. Native to the Valencia region, it’s now more widely planted, and whilst Bobal wines are usually unremarkable, there are exceptions.
When the grapes come from old vines and/or from higher altitudes the results are impressive.
Finca Los Halcones is aged for 2 years in new French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Garnet coloured with violet edges and lush aromas of blackberry, toffee and black pepper. The flavours don’t disappoint, plum, prune (and other dried fruits) and spice, backed up by firm tannins.
