The Heilan Coo, Victoria, Australia (bottle price £12)
We absolutely love the Heilan Coo and we have included it in our Black Friday sale to show off its sheer value. It's typical full bodied Ozzie brilliance but with a step up from other options at this price. This is an underrated wine!
The Helian Coo is a a dedication to our favourite shaggy red-haired friends from the Highlands who were brought to Australia over 50 years ago to thrive on the rugged plains.
Syrah, or shiraz as it's known in the New World, is considered to be one of the great noble black grape varieties, because it can produce such deliciously dark, full-bodied and age-worthy wines.
Over time, the use of Shiraz or Syrah has taken on more meaning, and producers might choose one name or the other to indicate the style of their wine. A winemaker might bottle a “Shiraz” to indicate they made a rich, lush, riper, more fruit-forward wine in the Australian spirit. Or they might instead call their wine “Syrah” to indicate a more Old World–style wine. Unfortunately, these terms can be used inconsistently.
From estate owned vineyards in Victoria; the Heilan Coo is a silky Shiraz with a touch of Mataro (the Australian version of Mourvèdre for you wine geeks out there). This is definitely in the style of the new world Shiraz. The Heiland Coo screams to be paired with anything coming from the BBQ.
