Laureatus Albariño Sobre Lías, Rías Baixas, Spain (bottle price £22)
Wine made from the best vineyards in the Val do Salnés area in Rias Baixas, which are older than 30 years. The soils here are loamy and sandy with granite content.
Albariño grapes are carefully harvested according to their ripeness. The Albarino Sobre Lias remains on its fine lees for 3 years - these lees are 'refreshed' (ie. the old lees are replaced with fresh lees from the new vintage) - a rather unique process!
The result is a complex and serious Albariño which is only produced in the very best vintages. Intense aroma, very complex, with ripe fruits such as quince, wild peaches and mangoes. Also, tones of minerality, pastries (from the lees) and spices, which give the wine a special character.
